It is said that the name of the town originated from containers being shipped via railroad through the town bearing the name of Bolivia, South America, and the residents liked the name and adopted it as their own. In 1977, the county decided to move the county seat to Bolivia from Southport. Located along US Route 17, it is 18 miles to Wilmington and 53 miles to Myrtle Beach, SC.
